The Re-birth of Wollongong
Scaffolding covered entire city blocks for the best part of 2014, but as it peels away a new Wollongong emerges.
At the fore of the change was GPT's $200 million Wollongong Central expansion. The building opened in October 2014 to reveal an iconic architectural piece the envy of any city in the world. This claim was cemented in April with the building winning an international architecture award from the New York-based design publication Architizer.
Council's $20 million Crown Street Mall Refurbishment is also complete and adds a vibrant fresh face to the City Centre. To assist a rise in activity throughout the 400 meter long strip; Councils Economic Development team has streamlined procedures for activities in the Mall, such as alfresco dining, street performances, and fruit and florist stalls. The first activity to roll out from this initiative is the weekly Thursday night 'Eat Street' market that attracts nearly 8000 hungry foodies every Thursday evening
