Advantage Wollongong has this week attended the Avalon International Aerospace and Defence Exposition to promote the regions’ defence capabilities.

The biennial event is the largest aerospace exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere, with Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra and South Coast Gareth Ward a strong supporter of promoting the strengths of the Illawarra. Avalon brings together businesses, defence agencies, international prime contractors and other stakeholders with the aim to grow business development and learn more about the latest technology.

“With Asia Pacific growth, and the Commonwealth expecting to invest $195 billion in Defence over the next decade, now is the time to be growing our industries,” he said.

“The Illawarra is home to a sophisticated and well-developed innovation ecosystem and has a track record in delivering defence projects. For example, Wollongong developed and manufactured the armoured steel for the Collins-class submarines, Adelaide-class frigates, Hobart-class Air Warfare Destroyers.

“The Defence force’s presence in Wollongong is defined by its links to research and development organisations such as the Defence Materials Technology Centre (DMTC) and the University of Wollongong’s Centre for Computer and Information Security Research (CCISR)”.

Wollongong companies also provide expertise in complex communications systems, advanced fabrication and welding, and deployable health technology.
